walk away - a mindful morsel

I’m diggin’ the bite-sized Mindful Musing vibe from last week, so I’m running with it again and shifting to a shorter Mindful Morsel: a tasty nugget to help you sprinkle more mindful moments throughout your day (with hopes that the snowball effect will work in your favor).
Today’s Mindful Morsel is to walk away.
The other day a friend of mine brought up how people who smoke have these built in breaks where they purposefully walk away from their work. What a good point.
As a former smoker, I can tell you there is fierce dedication to taking smoke breaks, and I miss the ease I overlooked of inserting breaks in my day. Taking breaks was a must-do. Totally non-negotiable. Now, as a non-smoker, not so much.
When you don’t have a solid motivation, the hardest part can be actually walking away.
I’ve been working from home much more these past few weeks, and I’ve been struggling with this hard, so I sat down and mapped out a daily schedule that includes timers to check in with my body and mind, and some additional purposeful breaks.
I’m calling these ‘garden breaks’ – to promote tending to my body like a garden rather than a machine.
During these garden breaks, I’m making it mandatory for myself to step outside if the weather is conducive. I don’t care what I do — maybe it’s take 10 deep, intentional breaths or pace around my backyard or stare off into the distance in daze — it only matters that I leave the walls of my house and change my environment.
On days when the weather isn’t conducive or I can’t muster the gusto to dress for it? It’s down to my basement for the same kind of jamboree. I have a plan, and I have a backup plan.
So what will it take for you to walk away regularly? To see those breaks as purposeful and necessary? What motivation do you need?
